22nd Annual Art Directors Guild Awards Winners

Two nights ago the guild announced the winners for the 2018 edition of these annual awards that honor production design in 11 categories of film television, commercials, music videos and, for the first time, animation features.

ADG President Nelson Coates and Art Directors Council Chair Mark Worthington presided over the awards ceremony with comedian Jonathan Fernandez serving as host.

Winners are in *BLUE.  To check winners in all categories check press release at official site here (pdf file).

Yesterday the Art Directors Guild (ADG, IATSE Local 800) announced the nominations for the 22nd edition of their Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, music videos and, for the first time, animation features.  The announcement was made by Art Directors Guild President Nelson Coates and Awards Producers Thomas Walsh and Thomas Wilkins.

As previously announced, ADG Awards will honor eight-time Academy Award Nominee Katheleen Kenedy with the Cinematic Imagery Award. The “William Cameron Menzies Award” will honor Disney’s Oscar nominated animation filmmakers Ron Clements and John Musker. A special Leadership Award will be bestowed upon International IATSE President Matthew D. Loeb. The Outstanding Creative Achievement Award will be given to Production Designer Michael Baugh. Lifetime Achievement Awards will be presented to Production Designer Norm Newberry Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated Production Designer/Set Designer James Murakami, Scenic Artist John Moffitt, and Senior Illustrator/Art Director Martin Kline. The late Oscar-winning Production Designer Sir Ken Adam (Dr. Strangelove, James Bond) Senior Illustrator and Bambi’s Concept Designer Tyrus Wong will be inducted into the ADG Hall of Fame.

ADG Awards are open only to productions when made within the U.S. by producers signatory to the IATSE agreement. Foreign entries are acceptable without restrictions.

Not easy to guess which film could win the Oscar in the production design category and neither to guess the Oscar nominees but in the past five years, the winner of period film went to win the Oscar twice, once was fantasy category winner and once was contemporary category winner.  So our best guess will come when we learn the Oscar nominees and learn ADG winners as of now it's hard to do estimates.  For me, production design award-deserving movies are Blade Runner 2049 and Wonder Woman, then perhaps Logan; the other nominees have good production design but nothing that could be out-of-the-ordinary.

These are the Nominees

Period Film
Sarah Greenwood for Darkest Hour
Nathan Crowley for Dunkirk
Jim Clay for Murder on the Orient Express
Rick Carter for The Post
*Paul Denham Austerberry for The Shape of Water

Fantasy Film
Sarah Greenwood for Beauty and The Beast
*Dennis Gassner for Blade Runner 2049
Rick Heinrichs for Star Wars: The Last Jedi
James Chinlund for War of the Planet of the Apes
Aline Bonetto for Wonder Woman

Contemporary Film

Rusty Smith for Get Out
Chris Jones for Lady Bird
*Francois Audouy for Logan
Inbal Weinberg for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Animated Film
William Cone and Jay Shuster for Cars 3
*Harley Jessup for Coco
Olivier Adam for Despicable Me 3
Grant Freckelton for The Lego Batman Movie

68th Annual ACE EDDIE Awards Winners

A couple of days ago the ACE society had their awards ceremony and perhaps the biggest surprise is to have I, Tonya winning an editing award as believe there was nothing outstanding in film when it came to editing, sigh.

More expected Dunkirk collected the Dramatic award which paves a road to an Oscar win in the editing category.

Winners are in *BLUE.  To check winners in all categories, go official site here.

A few moments ago the American Cinema Editors Society announced the nominations for the 2018 EDDIE Awards which recognizes outstanding editing in film, television and documentaries.

Noteworthy are the changes organizers did to television and documentary categories where in general there is a clear category simplification and if you wish to learn changes go official site here.

Know is the first industry tech group to announce nominations but the biggest surprise is that there is NO surprise! (lol)  Just check the list of 10 films divided in Dramatic and Comedy categories and will notice that are the same films everybody have been talking about since the start of current awards season.  Perhaps the only dark horses are Molly's Game, Baby Driver and Blade Runner 2049; the rest are the films many are betting will get an Oscar Best Film nomination.

Again this year there will be discussions about what is a Comedy and what's not; so, to not spoil the habit here are my two-cents:  NONE of the five films nominated in the Comedy category are comedies.  Four are (strong) dramas and one is an action film.  Know don't really understand or like American humor, but yes, I did not laugh at all when watching any of those five movies.  Sigh.

By-the-way EDDIE Dramatic winner tends to become the Oscar winner, but somehow feel that this year winner could come from more from what group calls comedy.

Best Edited Feature Film Dramatic
Joe Walker for Blade Runner 2049
*Lee Smith for Dunkirk
Alan Baumgarten, Josh Schaeffer and Elliot Graham for Molly's Game
Michael Kahn and Sarah Broshar for The Post
Sidney Wolinsky for The Shape of Water

Best Edited Feature Film Comedy
Jonathan Amos and Paul Machliss for Baby Driver
Gregory Plotkin for Get Out
*Tatiana S. Riegel for I, Tonya
Nick Houy for Lady Bird
Jon Gregory for Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

Best Edited Animated Feature Film
*Steve Bloom for Coco
Clair Dodgson for Despicable Me 3
David Burrows, Matt Villa and John Venzon for The Lego Batman Movie

Best Edited Feature Documentary
Aaron I. Butler for Cries from Syria
*Joe Beshenkovsky, Will Snidaric and Brett Morgen for Jane
Ann Collins for Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold
TJ Martin, Scott Stevenson and Dan Lindsay for LA92

To check nominees at official site plus all television categories go here.  Awards ceremony will be on January 26 at the Beverly Hilton International Ballroom.

90th Academy Awards Nominations

Recently AMPAS announced the nominations for the 2018 edition of the Oscars honoring films released in 2017.  The announcement was made by Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis; Haddish performance was not really adequate to be reading the most famous, most expected award nominations where names mean everything for those being honored with an Oscar nomination.

Nevertheless, Haddish and Serkis announced online the nominees in 11 categories at 5:22am PT, with pre-taped category introductions by Academy members Priyanka Chopra, Rosario Dawson, Gal Gadot, Salma Hayek, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana, Molly Shannon, Rebel Wilson and Michelle Yeoh. Haddish and Serkis announced online and live TV in many countries of the world, the remaining 13 categories at 5:38 a.m. PT.

Will not deny that highly enjoyed the format of the first part where categories were introduced with a short video exemplifying what the category was all about and starring female actors.  Perhaps because was the first video or maybe because I like Gal Gadot but for me her video was the best category presentation.

As the nominees were announced had some gasps with unexpected nominees but before the second part started already knew (and confirmed what everyone was expecting) The Shape of Water was going to have the most nominations as was collecting noms in almost all craft/tech categories.  So, nope, no surprise when film was named leader of the pack and perhaps was a bit surprised of the 13 nominations and the distance to number 2, Dunkirk which collected 8.

There are so much to say about the nominations as there are many notable issues, so will have to order my thoughts to be able to mention a few.  Believe none is more notorious than having a female cinematographer nominated for the first time ever!  Which means that in the past 89 years of Academy Awards there was NO female cinematographer nominated!!!  As her work in Mudbound is remarkable, Rachel Morrison absolutely deserved this and more honors that no doubt will come her way.   Then there is also very-well-deserved nomination to Greta Gerwig, who becomes the 5th female director to be nominated in 90 years of AMPAS history and the first female director to land a nomination with her directorial debut.  Most remarkable are Mary J. Blige who becomes the first woman to be nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song in the same year.

This edition has also a remarkable milestone as is the first time the Academy honors a trans director, Yance Ford with his documentary Strong Island and there is a film starring a trans actress with a nomination, Daniela Vega in The Fantastic Woman. So, not only in gender there were broken barriers but also in a LGBT minority.

Even if I question the reason why Christopher Nolan got a nomination for Dunkirk, will not deny the fact that is about time Nolan gets a nomination!  Yes, it's the first he ever gets.  Unbelievable, isn't?  There are a couple of his films that deserved his nomination as more clearly showcased his directorial outstanding skills, but well, the Academy is famous for doing this kind of honor for the wrong film. Sigh.  Yes, Meryl Streep becomes the actor with the most nominations breaking once again her own Oscar record; it's her 21st Academy Award nomination.  But as much nods Streep has she's not the top individual with Oscar nominations, the title belongs to composer John Williams who just got his 51st nomination.

If we go on with people records there is one that's notable as no one doubts the outstanding cinematography by Roger Deakins -in so many films- who just earned his 14th nomination and has won NO Oscar.  That's odd, isn't? One of the biggest surprises was Paul Thomas Anderson nomination, who now becomes the most nominated non-tech filmmaker without an Oscar as there is no writer, director or actor who has more nominations (8) without a win.

On top, age had a milestone as none other that Christopher Plummer (88) becomes the oldest Oscar acting nominee in history.  Also 22-years-old Timothee Chalamet is the youngest Best Actor nominee in almost 80 years as record-holder 19-years-old Mickey Rooney got a nomination in 1944.

There are more first-ever like Logan being the first live-action superhero movie nominated for its screenplay, Lebanon gets it's first-ever nomination, Octavia Spencer became the only black actress to follow up an Oscar victory with two nominations, and more, but will stop here.

The major snub for me is in the documentary category as is hard to understand why Jane was not nominated after getting so-many honors in current awards season -still I'm hopeful now Faces Places could win and Agnes Varda will become the first person to win an Honorary and a Competitive Oscar in the same year.  Fatih Akin's In The Fade got snubbed after collecting some honors, sigh.  Alright there was no spot left but yes, agree with those who say Florence Pugh's powerhouse performance in Lady Macbeth deserved a Best Actress spot.

Will not get into who will win as hope to do traditional Oscar predictions,  but we all know there are some categories that have to be locked and we all know the winner.  The only disruption to  sure-things is the inclusion of Phantom Thread, which have to figure out how could influence Academy voters decision.

24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Winners

Yesterday evening the guild had their awards ceremony and for the first time ever had a host and was female as well as all award presenters.  So was a night of female actors, which I suppose goes well with all the demonstrations happening during the day all over the good old USA.

Obviously this female thing does not reflect the industry, which is still male dominated; but, it's time the country has a strong shift toward better equality as if trend goes there, then the rest of the world will follow sooner than later.  Sigh.

All right, enough of non-cinema related comments.  We know Actors guild is the largest of all and the one that has more Academy voters, so all eyes were fixed into what guild members will do and seems Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri as well as Frances McDormand have increased their chances to win top AMPAS awards.  As a matter of fact and according to what we have learn with PGA and SAG winners, it seems like Oscars male actor is lock while best picture could be a race between The Shape of Water and Three Billboards outside Ebbing and best actress a close race between Sally Hawkins and Frances McDormand.  Still coming are DGA awards and then we will get an idea of what could happen with the best director category.

Three Billboards outside Ebbing became the big winner among actors as got three awards but believe that in general and including TV categories the guild behaved in such a conservative way that doesn't speak well about whoever voted as honors went to "expected" individuals in traditional movies and shows. Sigh.  Fortunately other awards are recognizing newer trends both in films and TV.

Winners are in *BLUE. To check winners in all categories go official site here.

12/13/17
A few minutes ago Olivia Munn and Niecy Nash revealed the nominees from the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.  The nominations for the 2018 edition of these awards are given to performances in films released in 2017.  Two nominating panels -one for television and one for film- each composed of 2,500 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year's nominees.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri leads the pack with four (4) nominations followed by Lady Bird (3), and with two each, The Big Sick, Get Out, I, Tonya, and Mudboud.

As Scott Feinberg from THR notes in a tweet, "It has been 22 years since a film won the best picture Oscar without being nominated for this SAG award, so one of these five is almost certainly your eventual winner", he's referring to the top award, Cast in a Motion Picture.  I tend to agree with him but there are a few movies that not many have seen and could stop the trend, The Post, Phantom Thread, and All the Money in the World; another batch of independent movies that could upset the trend are The Florida Project and Call Me by Your Name and last, but not least, there is The Shape of Water that I'm certain will get a nomination and in my book still has high chances to win top Oscar.

There are some major surprises but not one more shocking than honoring Judi Dench with a nomination when the spot should have been given to Meryl Streep for example.  Admit that I did not enjoy much the film, Victoria and Abdul nor Dench performance so definitively that's the spot that should go to Streep or even Michelle Williams but surely these two were overlooked because members haven't seen the films. Then no one will ever convince me that James Franco performance in The Disaster Artist is "better" than Daniel Day-Lewis in Phantom Thread. Sigh.

On the not so-serious side, my biggest surprise is to find Thimotee Chalamet was nominated before in 2013 for the drama ensemble in Homeland and besides being in Call Me by Your name, he also performs in Lady Bird!  -and me believing he was a newcomer (lol).

This year the Life Achievement goes to none other than Morgan Freeman and if you wish to read about his impressive career and long list of achievements and honors go to SAG official site here.

Now final voting information will be sent to the 121,544 SAG-AFTRA members in good standing across the country, who may vote on all categories.  Kristen Bell to host the awards ceremony on Sunday, January 21, 2018, an event which is simulcast live on TNT and TBS.  She breaks new ground as the SAG Awards first-ever host.

To check film and television nominations at the official site go here (pdf file).

Not often talk about television but there are some nominations that called my attention, most remarkable is the nomination of Millie Bobby Brown in Stranger Things which I find extremely well-deserved.  Then was a huge positive surprise to find Glow nominated as when watching felt I was doing something "bad" for my viewing-reputation but uff!, am I so glad that even when I feel I'm having a "guilty-pleasure" moment, my good-cinema intuition still works (lol!). Yes, I devoured Glow in one long binge moment.

29th Producers Guild of America Awards Winners

Last night the guild had their awards ceremony and as expected (by me) The Shape of Water won top award to absolutely improve its chances to get AMPAS maximum honor.

Same happens to Coco in animation and Jane in documentary; but still hope Oscar documentary category will include that French doc everyone is talking about.  Sigh.

Biggest surprises came in the TV categories as even when honors were given to great shows (ones that behave like long-form-films) like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Handmaid's Tale, will not deny my surprise with the winner of the Non-Fiction category, Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath. Sigh.

Winners are in *BLUE.  To check winners in all categories go official site here.

1/5/18
Today the Producers Guild of America announced the nominations for their annual Awards and no doubt that from all guilds announcements these are the nominees most film pundits anxiously await as is directly related to the 10 possible Oscar nominees and of course, PGA winner frequently becomes Academy Best Film winner.

Before the announcement there were too-many speculations, predictions, guessing-games and crystal-ball visions.  But most expect Get Out, Lady Bird, Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri, Call Me by Your Name, The Shape of Water and Dunkirk are to be nominated.  Then the second group of probable nominees are The Florida Project, The Post, Darkest Hour, I Tonya and some even mention one film that could be a BIG push for Netflix if gets a PGA nomination: Mudbound.

Then reality struck.  The biggest positive surprise is Wonder Woman getting a nomination which undoubtedly opens a huge door for an Oscar nom.  There is no doubt that Molly's Game just upped its game in current awards season as seems critics overlooked film but industry is not forgetting about Aaron Sorkin directorial debut. Perhaps the biggest snub is Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, Phantom Thread, a film that possibly will end its run in current awards season; also surprising is the absence of Darkest Hour but believe film Oscar chances are more in the Best Actor category than in any other.

Then, for the first time there are 11 PGA nominees in top category, instead of the usual 10 as there was a tie in voting.  So if Oscar noms go up to 10 (which is still Best Film Oscar maximum nominations -read the rule again today as there are many industry articles claiming Oscar has only 5 nominations and it's not what the Academy says in its current rules and eligibility), then there will be at least one film out; but more realistically, top category at the Academy Awards usually gets around 8 nominations, therefore there are more films that could disappear and there are chances that at least one film not nominated by PGA could make it to Oscars nominations.  By-the-way today started the Oscar voting, so those Academy Members that follow industry news will get their usual doses of influence with all the buzz and fuzz around what the guilds do.

23rd Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards Winners

Last night the film critic's group had their awards ceremony and no, wasn't able to watch live but seems ceremony was business as usual with nothing relevant happening.

As expected The Shape of Water won top award and the most of the night, four; perhaps what was unexpected is Sally Hawkins not winning in the actress category.

As was announced before, Gal Gadot received the #SeeHer Award presented by the Association of National Advertisers in conjunction with the CW Network.  Gadot accepted the award from her Wonder Woman director, Patty Jenkins.

Winners are in *BLUE.  To check winners in all categories go official site here.

12/7/17

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) announced today the nominees for the 2018 edition with The Shape of Water leading the pack with 14 nominations followed a bit far by Call Me by Your Name, Dunkirk, Lady Bird and The Post with 8 nominations each.

Blade Runner 2049 collected 7 nominations followed by The Big Sick and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri each with 6, and Get Out and I, Tonya with 5.  Group has a clear leader but as what is happening this year, there are several movies with multiple nominations and no mater how large the amount of films with nominations remarkable is that group adds no new film to the race of major categories as all have been already honored by other film critics groups.

2017 has proved to be an incredibly exciting year in movies – and one of the most wide-open in terms of awards possibilities,” said BFCA President Joey Berlin. “The mix of legendary filmmakers and performers along with vibrant new voices representing fresh and varied styles and perspectives has entertained and challenged critics and audiences alike. It’s been a joy to experience these films and we can’t wait to celebrate them all on January 11th.”

The awards show will return to the CW Network and will be broadcast LIVE on January 11, 2018 from 8:00 to 10:00pm ET.  As we all know the television branch also announced the TV nominations and if you wish to learn them go to official site here.

75th Annual Golden Globe Awards Winners

Ceremony was too-rush for my taste as in the beginning winners could do long acceptance speeches but as show went on jokes/funny-moments started to disappear and long-faced presenters just read nominees and called the winner. Then, the all-black red carpet plus black ballroom look felt in two extreme senses, one: very-elegant and two: a funeral. Viewers decided which side suited best their feelings. Me saw elegance.

Many tend to forget the Globes are given by journalists and NOT by movie makers, the greatest thing HFPA has is that used to give a very-entertaining, fun-to-watch show that many enjoyed for the entertainment value and not for who won the infamous awards which throughout the years have more scandals than "credibility". Nevertheless, as many winners mentioned in their acceptance speech, the group managed to elect a female president and believe that's their greatest achievement in current anniversary edition.

Winners do not surprised me and was in the television categories where I was pleasantly surprised as my favorite shows got honors; but in film categories what called most the attention were the snubs, especially the movie that film critics are placing in their #1 spot, Get Out.

The night's big winner is Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri as is the film with most awards, four.   So here are the winners in *BLUE. To check winners in all categories go official site here.

To check motion picture and television nominations go official site here.  Know always talk about movies but fell like sharing that many of the nominated shows look/feel like "long movies" (which I simply LOVE!!) and the best TV category no doubt is Best Performance by an actress in a Television Series - Drama where actresses performances are truly outstanding in great-to-binge-watching like a "long movie".

By the way on December 13 at 8:00pm ET on NBC the Golden Globes 75th Anniversary Special will air.  The star-studded show is part of the 75th Anniversary celebrations and will be a funny, poignant and celebratory walk down memory lane featuring clips, exclusive behind-the-scenes goodies, original interviews and the special memories of those who, through the years, have become part of our Golden Globe family. Produced by dick clark productions (dcp) in association with the HFPA, the two-hour special will be hosted by Eric McCormack and Debra Messing.

Yes, was able to watch the live streams with all the nominations as there was a first batch -where the most expected foreign film nominations were announced- and a second batch broadcasted along American TV morning shows, where major categories were announced. Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) president, Meher Tatna, introduced presenters Alfre Woodard, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Bell and Sharon Stone who announced the nominations.

In general, there are some surprises but the biggest for me is finding that this group of journalists already watched the much-buzzed film All The Money in the World and they even gave a nomination to Christopher Plummer for a role he filmed in a rush (!!!) not long ago. Sigh. Well, let's hope film is as interesting as many are hoping, including me. They also seem to be the only ones that have seen Denzel Washington movie, sigh.

Then there is that noise that's really bothering me as buzz went loud to say there were no female directors nominated. Enough. No director should be nominated because of their gender or to fill a quota. Directors are and should be nominated for their work and any film related event should consider ONLY their work and stop trying to be politically correct. Even Women Film Directors are commenting on this and this copy and paste of their tweet.

Also re: #GoldenGlobes2018 snubs Patty Jenkins, Kathryn Bigelow, Sofia Coppola and Dee Rees aren't snubs. They're all talented women, but none except Rees had the critical support needed to get a directing nom and Rees was hampered by Netflix's inexpert campaigning.

Enough is enough. Stop this as will eventually create more damage than benefit female filmmakers and this goes especially to a new film critics group in Los Angeles that decided to split the Director category into Female and Male directors (????!!!!). All the pressure makes people to do "stupid" things. Sigh.

Not a flattery statement but somehow article reminds us that the Golden Globes are FUN (nominations are fun-to-read and show is fun-to-watch), this is an excerpt from a New York Times article that you could read here. So my best suggestion is to have FUN with the GG and forget about how does or does not reflect/predict the Oscars or any other "more serious" awards season event or if they do whatever is necessary to assure BIG STARS will make it to the show or if films are not really comedy or musical or whatever else you are tempted to criticize. Last, do not forget that this is a successful show as nominees attend the event and audiences from around the world watch the TV show.

Long seen as the most unserious stop on Hollywood’s awards circuit, the Golden Globes are handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of mostly freelance journalists, only 89 of whom vote. Studios see members as easy to manipulate, a reputation the group contends is long outdated.

New this year is the name change from "Miss Golden Globes" to "Globes Ambassador" and the first one to inaugurate the renamed role is Dwayne Johnson daughter Simone Garcia Johnson.

Well, let's go back to the nominations. The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro leads the pack with seven (7) nominations followed closely by The Post and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri with six (6) each. Lady Bird has four (4) and there are five films with three (3) nominations each: I, Tonya, The Greatest Showman, All the Money in the World, Call Me by Your Name and Dunkirk.

The biggest surprise perhaps is (as noted by critic Guy Lodge on Twitter) The Greatest Showman scored more nominations than (awards season favorite) Get Out. We know Hugh Jackman is more TV show friendly that lesser known actors, so then perhaps is no surprise (lol!).

Seth Meyers will host the 2018 awards ceremony from the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton on January 7th; show will be broadcast live at 8:pm ET/ 5:00pm PT on NBC.
